One drive is getting picky with known-good disks. Rails are clean, speed sounds normal, no banging. I want to clean the head before going deeper.
99% isopropyl on a foam swab and a light touch still the boring correct answer?

Yes. Power off, barely damp swab, no scrubbing like you are removing paint. Let it dry completely. I avoid cotton if it is the fluffy kind that leaves fibers.
Also inspect the disk you were testing with. A shedding or dirty disk can undo the cleaning immediately.
Cleaned it and retired one suspicious disk. Five loads in a row now. Boring correct answer wins again.
