Ours met in a library basement once a month. Half the night was swapping disks and the other half was one patient person explaining printers. I was too young to appreciate how much volunteer effort kept it going.

Church hall, folding tables, instant coffee. One member brought a 1084 monitor in its original box every single month.
The modem demonstration felt like a live link to the moon. It was probably a local call.
