I started with a cross-assembler because fast rebuilds kept me motivated. Tried coding on the machine later and finally understood why old source is organized the way it is.
What did you start with, and would you recommend it now?
Which assembler did you learn on?

Cross-assembler first. Immediate errors and labels without a memory fight made the concepts much friendlier.
On-machine monitor because that is what I had. I recommend the experience once, not necessarily the lifestyle.
