I replaced one indexed lookup with a patched operand and gained exactly the cycles I needed. It also made tomorrow’s debugging problem today.
Where do you draw the line? Mine may be “only inside tiny routines with an obnoxiously clear label.”

Same rule. Small, isolated, commented with what gets patched and when. Everywhere else the cleverness tax is too high.
From the BASIC side of the fence, this entire sentence sounds illegal. I am fascinated.
