Picked up a breadbin locally. Seller says it was stored for years and I have not plugged it in yet. Original black power brick is in the box.
I know enough to be suspicious of that brick. Besides getting a modern supply, what is your ten-minute inspection routine?
New machine day. What should I check before power-on?

You are already doing the important bit: do not trust the old supply just because it looks clean. Check the board for corrosion, loose metal, cracked sockets and obviously cooked parts. Then verify the replacement supply voltages before connecting the computer.
Also tap every key before opening it. Write down the sticky/dead ones. It is much easier to tell whether cleaning helped when you have a before list.
Photograph the serial label and board before touching anything. Future-you will be grateful.
