A tune that only works at low volume

ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION
I have a bass patch that sounds huge quietly and turns into wet cardboard when the monitor gets loud. Same capture, same room.

Pretty sure the low mids are just piling up and my ears forgive it at whisper level. Anyone else keep a deliberately tiny speaker around for this?

Yes, a dreadful little mono computer speaker. If the bass line and kick remain separate on that thing, they usually behave everywhere else.

Wet cardboard is a legitimate 6581 genre.

Check at low volume, normal volume, then leave the room and listen from the hallway. Extremely scientific.
