I can make a wonderfully rude ring-mod sound in thirty seconds. Making one that still carries a melody is harder. Lowering the modulator and keeping the interval simple helped.
What is your reliable starting relationship between the two oscillators?
Ring modulation patches that stay musical

Octaves and fifths first, then detune only after the line works. Complex intervals turn to gravel quickly.
Try a slow-moving modulator while the carrier plays the melody. Less dramatic, much easier to place in a tune.
Short notes help. The attack has the interesting bite before the pitch relationship becomes tiring.
